And the book proves the notion that much of the information classified by the US government is really just stuff we already know, defusiing with a little more detail. Jeffery Hickman rated it really liked it Nov 13, And seeing as Defusing Armageddon doesn’t reveal much more than can be found in the subject’s Wikipedia page, that might defussing a quicker-reading version of this book. Deusing order to deal with such threats, the Nuclear Emergency Search Team was formed within the Department of Energy; later the “Search” was changed to “Support”. Despite the lack of cliffhangers, Richelson tells plenty of gripping stories of H-bombs dropping out of planes, reactors misbehaving and a nuclear-powered Russian satellite crashing to earth.
In fact, according to Richelson, most threats are hoaxes or extortion schemes, and no genuine nuclear terrorist plot has come near to succeeding. No trivia or quizzes yet. America’s super-secret arjageddon agency operating to prevent nuclear terrorist attacks.

A National Security Archive senior fellow, Richelson Spying on the Bomb devotes most of the book to a meticulous history of NEST’s makeup, training, the persistent squabbling over who controls it currently the Department of Energyand many important if undramatic missions such as helping ex-Soviet nations secure their nuclear stockpiles.

Preview — Defusing Armageddon by Jeffrey T. Richelson makes a good effort here, but part of the problem with both the book and the narrative of the Nuclear Emergency Search Team NEST at large is the lack of real use they’ve had in the four decades since their founding.
The letter included a sketch of the bomb’s design; Orlando police showed it to an armament officer at an Air Force base a few miles away, who said that it would work; Stanislaw Ulam, a co-inventor of the hydrogen bomb, thought so too.
