Typical of Ambler, this book has engaging and memorable characters and a vivid setting, and the pacing carries us along quickly — at times, pulse-poundingly. Soon after he arrives, amblee, he learns the sinister truth about hi. While Kenton becomes a spy by mistake, Vadassy is mistaken for a spy. Eruc for Ambler, the experience may or may not have given him a taste for concocting plausible fictions with a pseudo-technical bent, but it certainly showed he had a talent for it.

The first two thirds of the book build up the suspense as Marlow gets tangled in the web of deception and corruption of German and Soviet spies and the Fascist Italian secret police.
The probable Soviet spy Zaleshoff, is fir a much easier ride but his motives are always questioned. Erif anyone who’s seen Carol Reed’s movie or read Greene’s novellathe discovery that Latimer makes in Paris halfway through The Mask of Dimitrios is about as surprising as the guilt of the butler in Colonel Haki’s idea for a novel.
